We are having our first annual Code42 Foundation Celebration (aka Code42 reunion) on Wednesday, September 24 from 6 to 9 pm at La Doña CervecerĂa Brewery!Â
RSVPs have closed but feel free to stop by for a few moments if your plans changed day of.
This summer, Code42 Foundation’s advisory committee invited, received, and reviewed all 11 requests to our Deep Thought Grant. We're honored to award grants to three incredible organizations:
Family Tree Clinic: $200,000
NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center: $80,000
Gender Justice: $80,000
In 2016, Joe Payne (the CEO at the time), envisioned Code42 leaving a legacy in the Minnesota community, and he created the Code42 Foundation as a way for the company to give back and be a good neighbor. The Code42 Foundation’s giving structure was inspired by the principles of the Pledge 1% Movement. We committed to donating:
1% of profits (annually when profitable),
1% of equity (founder and employee donations), and
1% of employee time (2 days annually per employee) to charitable purposes.
In moving toward the adoption of these principles, Code42 founders Matthew Dornquast, Mitch Coopet and Brian Bispala donated a collective 1% of their equity in the company to establish the Code42 Foundation.Â
The Code42 Foundation is a donor-advised fund that distributes money to charitable organizations. The Minneapolis Foundation was selected both to administer the Code42 Foundation and to provide guidance to a committee of Code42 employees in the development of the Code42 Foundation’s mission, vision, and values.
From 2016 - 2024, we raised and granted over $200,000 to organizations working to disrupt the systems that perpetuate inequities, to maximize opportunities for communities that have historically lacked equal opportunities, and for every person to be accepted as a whole human.Â
In July 2024, Code42 was acquired by Mimecast and no longer exists as an independent company. With that sale, the Code42 Foundation pledged stock became liquid and financed the fund.Â
We are guided by a vision of liberation and justice - a Minnesota in which all individuals, communities, and cultures can thrive. We will leave the world a better place.Â
The Code42 Foundation sees that some individuals and communities are unable to thrive due to systemic inequities, gaps in opportunity, or social stigma.Â
Our mission is to disrupt the systems that perpetuate inequities, to maximize opportunities for communities that have historically lacked equal opportunities, and for every person to be accepted as a whole human.
We will invest in programs and initiatives that seek to end inequities such as:
Racial inequity
Gender inequity
Mental illness stigma
Education inequity
Persistent basic needs insecurity
The Code42 Foundation has three primary methods of granting funds:
Deep Thought Grant: Our largest annual grant supports an organization driving systemic, long-term change aligned with multiple mission focus areas. This grant is sourced by the Foundation committee.
Recommended Grants: Our annual nationwide grant program enables individuals from the Code42 community to influence Foundation funds. Nominees are selected based on their alignment with at least one of our mission's focus areas.
Community Building: We're evolving our Foundation to develop a community that upholds our shared Code42 spirit. Through fundraising and networking events, we aim to foster connection and purpose for alumni, leaving a lasting impact beyond the company.
